Free mobile-friendly checker
Open your page in a real browser at desktop, tablet and phone sizes, see a screenshot of each, and find out whether it's set up for mobile screens or spills off the side and makes visitors scroll sideways.
What this tool checks
Viewport tag
Whether the page has a viewport meta tag. Without it, phones show a zoomed-out desktop layout with tiny text.
Content wider than the screen
Whether the page is wider than the screen at each size, which causes sideways scrolling and cut-off content.
Three screen sizes
Desktop (1280×800), tablet (768×1024) and phone (390×844), with the tablet and phone views emulating a mobile browser.
Screenshots
A screenshot of the first screen at each size, so you can see what visitors see.
Loading problems
Whether the page failed or timed out at any of the sizes.
How the check works
We load your page in Chromium three times — once per screen size — wait for it to finish loading, then measure whether the page is wider than the screen and take a screenshot. The tablet and phone views use mobile emulation with a high-density display.
The score starts at 100: a missing viewport tag costs 20 points, each screen size with sideways overflow costs 15, and loading problems cost 10.
This quick check doesn't measure tap-target size, font size or overlapping elements. Signed-in users can run a deeper layout test on up to eight device profiles that also looks for those problems.
Common problems we find
No viewport tag
Common on older sites and hand-built pages; the phone view looks like a shrunken desktop page.
Fixed-width elements
Containers, tables or embeds set to a fixed pixel width that's wider than a phone screen.
Images and videos that don't shrink
Media without max-width: 100%, pushing the page wider than the screen.
Wide tables
Pricing or comparison tables with many columns.
Long unbroken text
Long URLs, email addresses or code that can't wrap onto the next line.
How to fix them
Add the viewport tag
Put <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> in the page head. Most modern themes already include it.
Use flexible widths
Replace fixed pixel widths with max-width and percentages, and use CSS grid or flexbox so layouts wrap on small screens.
Make media shrink to fit
In your CSS, give images, videos and iframes max-width: 100% and height: auto.
Let wide tables scroll inside their own box
Wrap tables in a container with overflow-x: auto, or stack columns on small screens.
Allow long words to break
Use overflow-wrap: anywhere on text areas that may contain long URLs.
Frequently asked questions
Does it test on real phones?
No. It uses a real Chromium browser set to phone and tablet screen sizes with mobile emulation. That catches layout problems reliably, but it isn't identical to every phone and browser, especially Safari on iPhone.
Is this the same as Google's Mobile-Friendly Test?
No. Google retired its standalone Mobile-Friendly Test in 2023. Our check looks at two of the most common causes of a poor mobile layout — a missing viewport tag and content wider than the screen — and shows you screenshots.
Why do the screenshots only show the top of the page?
We capture the first screen at each size, which is what visitors see before they scroll. The overflow check, however, measures the whole page width.
Does it check how fast my site is on mobile?
No. Use the speed checker for that — Lighthouse simulates a mid-range phone on a mobile connection by default.
My score is 100. Is my site perfect on mobile?
It means the page has a viewport tag and nothing spills off the screen at the three sizes we test. Buttons that are too small to tap or text that's too small to read need a closer look, or the deeper layout test available to signed-in users.
